Pierre-François"David"Beauchard(French pronunciation:[davidboʃaʁ];born 9 February 1959), also known by the pen nameDavid B.,is a Frenchcomic bookartist and writer, and one of the founders ofL'Association.

Biography

After studying advertising at the Duperré School of Applied Arts inParis,Beauchard began working in comics in 1985 (Pas de samba pour capitaine Tonnerre), and wrote and illustrated stories in numerous magazines, includingOkapi,À suivre,Tintin Reporter,andChic.[1]His distinctiveblack-and-whitestyle was influenced byGeorges PichardandJacques Tardi,among others.

In 1990, he co-founded the independent publisherL'Association,which became a major force in French small-press comics.[1]His comics appeared in theL'Associationanthology magazineLapinand in numerous small-format books. Much of his work in the 1990s wasdream art,collected inle Cheval blêmeandles Incidents de la nuit.

From 1996 to 2003, he created the acclaimed six-volumeautobiographicalepicl'Ascension du Haut Mal(meaning, literally, "The Rise of the High Evil" but published in English asEpileptic,"haut mal" indicating what is referred to in English as agrand mal seizure).[2]It was the first of his long works to be translated into English, and is now considered to be among the masterpieces of recentFranco-Belgian comics.The series has been repeatedly nominated for prizes at theAngoulême International Comics Festival:in 2002, the fourth volume received theAngoulême International Comics Festival Prize for Scenarioand in 1998 and in 2004, volumes 2 and 6 were nominated for thePrize for Best Comic Book.

Since 1997, he has also worked for publishers other thanL'Association,and has collaborated with other authors such asJoann Sfar,Christophe Blain,andEmmanuel Guibert.

In 1998, he was namedEuropean Cartoonist of the yearbyThe Comics Journal.[3]

In 2005 Beauchard was awarded theIgnatz Awardfor Outstanding Artist.

With historical assistance byJean-Pierre Filiu,Beauchard published the 2012 graphic novelBest of Enemies: A History of US and Middle East RelationsthroughSelfMadeHero.It was translated to English by Edward Gauvin.
