Deenabandhuis a defunctMalayalamlanguage newspaper printed daily and published from theThrissur city,KeralainIndia.The newspaper was the first periodicals published fromKingdom of Cochinwhich supported theIndian Independence Movement.[1][2]

History

Deenabandhu was started as a weekly on 26 January 1941 fromThrissurcity withV. R. Krishnan Ezhuthachanaseditor-in-chief.The newspaper was named afterCharles Freer Andrews,known affectionately asDeenbandhuorFriend of the Poor,a name given byMahatma Gandhifor his contributions to theIndian Independence Movement. [3]Majority of the news came from the political movements from theKochistate. The paper was also official organ of theCochin Prajamandalam.During theQuit India Movement,the Editor and the staff were imprisoned. Later, theDeenabanduresumed publication in 1944 after the release of its staff from jail. In January 1946, theDeenabanduwas turned into a daily newspaper and was shifted toErnakulam.In 1962 due to financial difficulties,Deenabanduceased publication.[4]
