Defneis a municipality anddistrictofHatay Province,Turkey.[2]Its area is 155 km2,[3]and its population is 165,494 (2022).[1]The district Defne was created in 2013 from parts of the former central district of Hatay and the district ofSamandağ.[4][5]It covers the southwestern part of the agglomeration ofAntakyaand the adjacent countryside.
Defne was heavily damaged bypowerful earthquakesin February 2023 and subsequent aftershocks.[6]
The municipality of Defne was named after the Greek mythological figure ofDaphne.[7]Tourist sites in Defne include the Harbiye Hydro Park and Harbiye Waterfall, as well as the historic site ofSt Simeon's Monastery.[8]
