Deirdre Lovejoy(born June 30, 1962)[1]is an American actress.

She is best known for her role asAssistant State's AttorneyRhonda PearlmanonHBO’sThe Wire.[2]She is also known for her roles as serial killerHeather Taffet(aka "The Gravedigger" ) on theFoxseriesBones[3]andWhite House CounselCynthia Panabaker onNBC's seriesThe Blacklist.[4]

Early life[edit]

Lovejoy was born inAbilene, Texas.[5][6][7]Her father was in theAir Forceand worked fromDyess Air Force Base.[7]

Lovejoy lived inConnecticut,thenPittsburgh,before moving with her mother toElkhart, Indiana,while Lovejoy was still in the fourth grade.[4][7]Her mother, Marcia Fulmer, met her second husband in Elkhart and worked as Arts and Entertainment editor atThe Elkhart Truth.[4][7][8]While in the fifth grade, Lovejoy played her first acting role as one of Big Daddy's grandchildren in an Elkhart Civic Theatre production ofCat on a Hot Tin Roofin which her mother played the part of Mae (dubbed "Sister Woman" ).[4][7][8]Lovejoy subsequently appeared in several productions at the Elkhart Civic Theatre, often alongside her mother.[8]

In 1980 Lovejoy graduated fromElkhart Memorial High School.[4][8]In 1984 she graduated from theUniversity of Evansvillewith adouble majorinTheaterandCommunications.[4][8]She also earned aMaster of Fine Artsfrom theNew York University Tisch School of the Artsthree years later.[4][8]

In 1990 Lovejoy appeared in her first television role asRosemary Kennedyin theABCmini-seriesThe Kennedys of Massachusetts.[8]Throughout the 1990s and 2000s she appeared on such series asLaw & Order,Seinfeld,Third Watch,Spin City,NYPD Blue,The West Wing,Cold CaseandLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit.[9]

From 2002 to 2008 Lovejoy starred asAssistant State's AttorneyRhonda PearlmanonHBO’sThe Wire.[2][4][6]From 2009 to 2011 she played the recurring role of the serial kidnapper and murdererHeather Taffet(aka "The Gravedigger" ) on the television seriesBones.In 2011 Lovejoy also appeared in the role of the mother of a student in the filmBad TeacherstarringCameron Diaz.

Lovejoy has alsoguest starredor held recurring roles on such TV series asLie to Me,Law & Order: Criminal Intent,Criminal Minds,Body of Proof,Girls,Orange Is the New Black,American GothicandShameless.[4][2][3][10]

Lovejoy has also appeared in severalBroadwayproductions, includingSix Degrees of Separation(1990),Getting and Spending(1998),The Gathering(2001) andNora Ephron’sLucky GuystarringTom Hanks(2013).[4][5]

In 2019, Lovejoy took part inPromethea in Prison,a theatrical project that involved a reading of the ancient Greek playPrometheus Bound.It featured an all-female cast that also includedSonja Sohn,one of Lovejoy's co-stars inThe Wire.

Also in 2019, Lovejoy starred in a one-person play she wrote, titledBird Elephant China.[4][5]The autobiographical play dealt with a series of unexplainedseizuresthat Lovejoy experienced in 2009.[4][5]The seizures affected her memory and her ability to walk and talk for almost a year.[4][5]She also experienced hallucinations during this time.[4][5]Lovejoy has been seizure free since 2009.[4]
