Dendroplexis agenusof birds in the woodcreepersubfamilyDendrocolaptinae.It was long merged intoXiphorhynchus,but its distinctness has now been established.[1]

Taxonomy

The genusDendroplexwas introduced in 1827 by the English naturalistWilliam John Swainson.[2]The genus name combines theAncient Greekdendronmeaning "tree" withplēssōmeaning "to strike".[3]Swainson did not specify atype speciesbut this was fixed in 2007 as thestraight-billed woodcreeperwhich had first been described in 1788 byJohann Friedrich Gmelinwith the binomial nameOriolus picus.[4][5]
