Richard Arthur Allan Browne(August 11, 1917 – June 4, 1989) was an Americancartoonist,best known for writing and drawingHägar the HorribleandHi and Lois.[1]

Early life and education

Dik Browne was born on August 11, 1917, in Manhattan.[2]He attendedCooper Unionfor a year,[2]then started work at theNew York Journal-Americanas a copy boy. He later worked in the art department, drawing maps and charts.[2]

Career

In 1936, photographers and artists were banned from theLucky Lucianocompulsory prostitutiontrial.[3][4]Browne slipped in undetected, and hiscourtroom sketchesgave theNew York Journal-Americananews exclusiveon the story.[3][4][5][6][7]

DuringWorld War II,in 1942, Browne joined theUnited States Army,and was assigned to draw maps and charts for an Army engineering unit, eventually rising to staff sergeant.[2]In his spare time, he created the comic "Ginny Jeep", a comic strip about theWomen's Army Corps,appearing in Army and Air Force newspapers.[8][9]

In the late 1940s, he worked as an illustrator forNewsweekas well as forJohnstone and Cushing,an advertising company, where, in 1944, he created theCarmen-Miranda-inspiredMiss Chiquitatrademark/logo,forChiquita,and later, theBirds Eyebird, aCampbell's Soupkids redesign, and aMounds candy barad.[10][11]

From 1950 to 1960, he drew The Tracy Twins, a comic strip, forBoys' Life.[2]His work for this strip, and for theMoundscandy bar ad, brought him to the attention ofKing Features Syndicate.[2]

In 1954, cartoonistMort Walker,seeing theMoundscandy bar ad,[10]enlisted Browne[10]to co-create thecomic stripHi and Lois,aspin-offof Walker's popularBeetle Baileystrip, featuring Beetle's sister, brother-in-law and their family. Walker wrote the strip, which Browne illustrated until his death. The series is now drawn by his sonChanceand written by Walker's sons. In 1973, Browne createdHägar the Horribleabout an ill-mannered red-bearded medievalviking.The comic was then produced by his sonChrisuntil 2023. Both strips have been successful, appearing in hundreds of newspapers for decades.[12]

Recognition

He got theNational Cartoonists Society'sBest Humor Stripplaque in 1959, 1960, and 1972, and itsReuben Awardas Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1962, forHi and Lois.[2]He was National Cartoonists Society president in 1963.[2]The National Cartoonists Society gave Browne a second Reuben Award forHägar the Horriblein 1973, and three more Best-Humor Strip awards in 1977, 1984, and 1986.[2]In 1973, the National Cartoonists Society gave him theElzie SegarAward.[citation needed]

Personal life

Browne and his wife, Joan, had two sons and one daughter. He died of cancer on June 4, 1989, at the age of 71, in Sarasota, Florida.[13][14]
