Doyle McManus(born May 5, 1953)[1]is an American journalist, columnist (for theLos Angeles Times),[2][3]who appears often onPublic Broadcasting Service'sWashington Week.[4][5]
Early life[edit]
Doyle Daniel McManus is the first-born son of Lois Doyle and James R. McManus, who was aSan Franciscoadvertisingexecutive.[6][7]His younger brothers include Chris (born 1955)[8]and Reed (born 1956).[9]
He earned anA.B.inhistoryatStanford Universityin 1974, and was aFulbright scholarat the University of Brussels.[10][11]
Career[edit]
As anundergraduate,McManus worked on theStanford Daily.
He was a foreign correspondent for three years at theUnited Press International,beginning inBrussels.
He joined theLos Angeles Timesin 1978, reporting fromLos Angeles,theMiddle East,Central America,New York.He transferred to theTimes'sWashington, D.C.,bureau in 1983, where he covered theU.S. State Department,andWhite House.He succeededJack Nelsonas bureau chief in 1996.[4][5]After thirteen years as bureau chief, he reportedly told colleagues that he had "long ago asked for a new assignment."[12]In November 2008, the financially troubledTribune Companymade him acolumnistwhen it closed theLos Angeles Times'bureau in favor of a single Washington bureau for all its newspapers.[3]
Mr. McManus has written forForeign Policy,Time,Sports Illustrated,and theLondonDaily Express.He appears regularly on the PBS commentary programWashington Week.
He has covered everypresidential electionsince 1984.
In January 2008, he was a moderator atHillary ClintonandBarack Obama'spresidential primarydebate inLos Angeles.[13]
