Drone zithers in Europe, type "Scheitholt"

Drone zithersordroned zithersare stringed instruments of thezitherfamily that have few (sometimes only one)melodicstringsand a greater number ofdronestrings. The oldest known form of drone zither is theScheitholt.

The Scheitholt developed into many different variants of drone zithers, such as theLangspil,theEpinette des Vosgesor theHummel.TheAppalachian dulcimeris a traditional American form.
