Dwight Ramos(born September 2, 1998) is a Filipino-American professionalbasketballplayer forLevanga Hokkaidoof the JapaneseB.League.He playedcollege basketballfor theAteneo Blue Eaglesof theUniversity Athletic Association of the Philippines(UAAP).[1]He has also played for thePhilippines national basketball team.

Early life and education[edit]

Ramos was born on September 2, 1998, in the United States inWest Covina, Californiato Artemio Ramos fromIlocos Surand Liliya Ramos from Russia. He is the eldest of three children. Ramos is second cousins with Miss Universe Bahrain 2022 Evlin Abdullah-Khalifa, by way of their mothers being cousins.[2]

High school career[edit]

He played for the Mustangs, the varsity basketball team ofWalnut High School,under head coach Joe Khouzam.[3]

College career[edit]

US NCAA[edit]

While Ramos was still in high school, he was contacted by coachTab Baldwinwho tried to recruit him to play forAteneo de Manila University'sBlue Eaglesin the Philippines once he graduates. However he decided to forego from playing for Ateneo to continue his college basketball career in the United States.[4]

Ramos during his attendance atFullertoncampus ofCalifornia State Universityplayed for theCal State Fullerton Titansbasketball team. He suited up for the team in theNCAA Division Ifrom 2016 to 2018.[3][4]He then went on to play for theBroncosofCalifornia State Polytechnic UniversityinPomonafor one season in theNCAA Division II.[4][5]

Ateneo Blue Eagles[edit]

After playing for the Cal State Pomona Broncos, Ramos went to the Philippines to play for theAteneo Blue Eaglesin theUAAPbut had to serve residency in 2019 before he could suit up in official UAAP games.[6]He played for Ateneo in thePhilippine Collegiate Champions Leaguehelping the team clinch the2019 league title.[4]He was expected to make his UAAP debut for the Blue Eagles inSeason 83[6]which was cancelled due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.He became eligible to enter thePBA draftin 2021, but decided to forego from entering for a chance to play alongside his brother in Ateneo.[7]

Professional career[edit]

Toyama Grouses (2021–2022)[edit]

Ramos decided to forgo his one year of eligibility inUAAPand he signed withToyama Grousesof the JapaneseB.Leagueon September 10, 2021.[8]Ramos played only for the 2021–22 season with his team finishing 7th in the west conference. Toyama did not renew his contract.[9][10]

Levanga Hokkaido (2022–present)[edit]

Ramos remained in the B.League, joiningLevanga Hokkaidoin May 2022.[11]He averaged 10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game during his first season with the team.

On June 6, 2023, he signed a contract extension with the team.[12]

In April 2024, Ramos sufferedorbital floor fractureduringLevanga Hokkaido’s loss toUtsunomiya Brexin the JapanB.League.[13]

National team career[edit]

Ramos has been a prospective member of thePhilippines national teamby its management as early 2018, when he was included in a 23-member pool intended for the2023 FIBA World Cup.[5]He debuted for the Philippines in February 2020, playing in the2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiermatch againstIndonesia.The Philippines won 100–70 in that match with Ramos contributing 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.[14]Ramos played with a squad reinforced byPBAplayers in the first window of the qualifiers. Due to theCOVID-19 pandemic,subsequent qualifier matches were repeatedly postponed with Ramos flying back and forth between the Philippines and the United States, usually training in the latter where pandemic-related protocols are more lenient.[15]

Ramos was included in the 21-man pool for the2023 FIBA World Cup,[16]where he was eventually included in the final 12-man lineup.[17]

Personal life[edit]

Since 2020, Ramos has been in a relationship with professional volleyball playerKim Kianna Dy.[18]
