Erode Venkata Krishnasamy Sampath Elangovanis an Indian politician who is a current member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, representing theErode East Assembly constituency.He previously represented theGobichettipalayamLok Sabha constituency ofTamil Naduand was the Textiles Minister for the Union Government between 2004 and 2009, in Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh Government. He is a member of theIndian National Congressparty.[1]

Early life[edit]

He was born in Erode District on 21 December 1948. He is the son ofE. V. K. Sampathand the grandson ofPeriyar E. V. Ramasamy's brother Krishnasamy.[1]

Political career[edit]

In the 2009 Lok Sabha election, he lost toA. Ganeshamurthiof theMDMKby 49,336 votes inErode constituency.He was appointed President ofTamil Nadu Congress CommitteebyAll India Congress CommitteeChiefSonia Gandhion 31 October 2014, followed by the resignation ofB. S. Gnanadesikan.In the 2019 Lok Sabha election he lost to O. P. Ravindranath Kumar, the son ofO. Panneerselvam,inTheni.Elangovan was the only candidate of theUPAto lose in the2019 Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.He was also elected as aMember of Legislative Assemblyin Tamilnadu fromSathyamangalam Assembly constituencyin 1984 andErode East constituencyin a by-election in 2023, due to the death of his sonThirumagan Evera.[2]
