EA Sports WRC,also known asEA WRCor simplyWRC,is aracing video gamedeveloped byCodemastersand published byEA Sports.It holds the official licence (acquired by Codemasters in 2020) of theWorld Rally Championshipand powered byUnreal Engine 4.It is the first Codemasters rally game to have the official WRC licence sinceColin McRae Rally 3in 2002. The game was released forWindows,PlayStation 5andXbox Series X/Son 3 November 2023.

Gameplay

EA Sports WRCfeatures 78 rally cars.[1]10Groups Rallycars are from theWorld Rally Championship,including threeRally1vehicles such as thePumaofM-Sport,thei20 NofHyundaiand theGR YarisofToyotaand seven other cars from thesupport categories— theWorld Rally Championship-2and theJunior World Rally Championship,includingFord Fiesta Rally3— as well as 68 classic rally cars.[2]The other rally cars includeCitroën Xsara WRC,Mini John Cooper Works WRC,Ford Fiesta Rally4andColin McRaeR4, which was previously featured inDirt 3.[3]Car Builder,which is similar toMy Teamof theF1series, allows players to create and customise their own rally cars.[4]The game includes over 200competition stagesacross 18WRC rallies.[5]Multiplayer mode is available for up to 32 cross-platform players.[6]Virtual realitymode is planned to be implemented in the future.[7]

Development and release

The game was revealed on 5 September 2023.[8]It was initially built as a sequel toDirt Rally 2.0.[9]Codemasters,the developer of theF1series, would develop their first WRC video game after they regained licence in 2020.[10]The last game by Codemasters with WRC licence wasColin McRae Rally 3released in 2002, featuring the2002 season.[11]EA Sportswould involve and publish the game after Codemasters was acquired byElectronic Artsin 2021.[12]The game is powered byUnreal Engine 4,replacingEgo,which Codemasters was long-term implemented in its previous rally title, theColin McRae RallyandDirtseries.[13]The game would be available forWindows,PlayStation 5andXbox Series X/Son 3 November 2023.[14]It would also feature three covers, withFord Puma Rally1for PC,Hyundai i20 N Rally1for Xbox andToyota GR Yaris Rally1for PS5.[15]

Reception

EA Sports WRCreceived "generally favorable reviews", according to review aggregatorMetacritic.[20]Reviewers praised the handling model, the extensive stage length and the car builder. Criticism mainly stemmed from frame-rate issues, especially on the Windows version.
