Edward Wilber Berry(February 10, 1875 – September 20, 1945) was an Americanpaleontologistandbotanist;the principal focus of his research waspaleobotany.
Early life
[edit]Berry was born February 10, 1875, inNewark, New Jersey,and finished high school in 1890 at the age of 15.
Career
[edit]Berry studied North and South American flora and published taxonomic studies with theoretical reconstructions ofpaleoecologyandphytogeography.He started his scientific career as an amateur scientist, working withWilliam Bullock Clarkas a lab assistant in 1905.[1]AtJohns Hopkins Universityhe held various positions including teacher, research scientist, scientific editor, provost, and dean. Berry was appointed geologist with theU. S. Geological Surveyin 1910 along with the post of assistant state geologist for Maryland in 1917, both positions he kept until retiring in 1942.[1]
