El Palmar de Troyais amunicipalityin south-westSpainin theprovince of Seville,in the autonomous community ofAndalusia.In 2018, it became the province's 106thmunicipalityafter it seceded fromUtrera.As of 2019 it has a population of 2,340.

History

Although there are historical data fromRoman timesand from the 13th century, when it belonged to theMoorish Band,the current settlement is mainly due to the relatives of theRepublicanprisoners who, after thecivil war,built the Torre del Águila reservoir.[2]

It was part of the municipality ofUtrerauntil 2018, from which, after a secession process, it became independent on 3 October 2018.[3]

Nowadays, the municipality is particularly known for thePalmarian Christian Church,aschismaticCatholicsectfounded byClemente Domínguez y Gómez,known as "Pope Gregory XVII" in the Palmarian Christian faith since 6 August 1978 as a result of alleged apparitions of theVirgin Mary(Our Lady of Palmar) and ofJesus Christon the site from the 1960s. He was later claimed astrue Pope of whole Catholic faith,instead of the accepted Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyła, who took the name ofJohn Paul II.The Church is based at theCathedral-Basilica of Our Crowned Mother of Palmar.[4]
