History

Elddis was founded in 1965 by Siddle Cook and his son, Raymond, and is named for 'Siddle' spelt backwards.[2]They established a factory inConsett,County Durham,and in 1960, were manufacturing two popular models of caravan, Whirlwind and Tornado.[2]A third model, Cyclone, was launched in the late 1960s.[2] Its caravans were mainly named for meteorological phenomena likestratusetc.[3]In 1973, Elddis was acquired by Ace Belmont International (ABI), a company formed the previous year by a merger between Ace Caravans and Belmont Caravans.[4]

Elddis was later acquired byThe Explorer Groupwho were in turn acquired byErwin Hymer Groupin 2017.[5]They own the brands Compass and Buccaneer, plus theintellectual propertyrights to the brandCrownwhich they acquired in 1989 following ademergerfrom ABI who sold out to Swift caravans.
