Eliane Margaret Elizabeth Lange(born 16 July 1928) is a French-born Brazilian actress and writer, best known for playing the lead role in 1953 filmThe Landowner's Daughter.

Life and career

Lange was born on 16 July 1928, inParis, France.Her father was Brazilian and her mother was English.[1]She came toBrazilwhen she was six months old.[2]From a young age, she began working with underprivileged children, mainly in Dona Marta Favela. Dissatisfied with her limitations, she went to study inEngland,and from there she went toGreece,where she helped in aconcentration campfor Greek children during thecivil war.[3]

Back in Brazil in 1950, she was invited byTom Payneto audition for the filmCaiçara.[4]After the success ofCaiçara,Tom convinced her to filmÂngela in Pelotas.It was the beginning of his brief, but very important film career.[5]Soon came the consecration, inSinhá Moça(1953),[6]which earnedTom Paynea critic's prize at the4th Berlin International Film Festivaland international acclaim.[7][8]

In 1957, she andTom Paynedid a short-lived weekly programme,A Vida com Eliane,onTV Tupi,an experience she found disappointing, and she never wanted to do television again.[9]

Personal life

After all the artistic career, Eliane marriedTom Paynein 1951, they divorced in 1966.[10]They had three children, two daughters and a son. Payne died in 1996.[11]She used to live inRio,São Paulo,GuarujáandPetrópolis.Since 2008 Eliane lives inPirenópolis,Goiás.[12]She wrote an autobiography,Ilhas, Veredas e Buritis,[13]published in 2005 byBrasiliense.[14]
