Elis Özbay(born 24 July 2001) is a Turkishrowercompeting in thelightweightsingle scullsanddouble scullsevents.[1]She is qualified to participate at the2024 OlympicsinParis,France,[2]as the first Turkish female rower.[3][4]

Career

In her youth years, Özbay played volleyball five years long. She then switched over torowingwith the encouragement of her physical education teacher in the school. She entered Academy ofFenerbahçe Rowing.[1][5]In the beginning, she found this sport hard because her hands were wounded while rowing.[4]For her development, the club imported acarbon fiberracing shellfrom Italy worth20,000.[5]

Özbay is 1.73 m (5 ft 8 in) tall.[5]

2021

At the2021 World Rowing CupinZagreb,Croatia, Özbay won the bronze medal in the lightweight single sculls (LW1x) event.[6]

She claimed the gold medal in the Lightweight Double Sculls (LW2x) event at the2021 World Rowing U23 ChampionshipsinRačice,Czech Republic.[5][7]

She captured the gold medal with her teammate in the Lightweight Double Sculls (BLW2x) event at the2021 European Rowing U23 ChampionshipsinKruszwica,Poland.[5]

2022

She won the silver medal in the Lightweight Single Sculls (LW1x) event at the2022 World Rowing U23 ChampionshipsinVarese,Italy.[2][5][8]

She became champion in the Lightweight Single Sculls (BLW1x) event at the2022 European Rowing U23 ChampionshipsinHeindonk,Belgium. [2][8]

At the 2022European Universities Rowing ChampionshipsinGolden Horn, Istanbul,Turkey, she became champion in the lightweight single sculls event.[8]

2023

At the Croatia Open 2023 inZagreb,Croatia, Özbay took the silver medal in the single sculls (SWA1x) event.[9]

She finished the Final E of the single sculls event at the2023 World Rowing ChampionshipsinBelgrade,Serbia as runner-up ranking 26 in total.[10]

She won the gold medal in the Lightweght Single Scull event at the2023 World Rowing U23 ChampionshipsinPlovdiv,Bulgaria.[1][2][5][11]

2024

Özbay received the bronze medal in the single sculls event at the 2024 Croatia Open inZagreb,Croatia.[12]

She competed at the Final Qualification Regatta inLucerne,Switzerland in May 2024.According to her ranking,[3]she qualified to represent her country at the2024 OlympicsinParis,France,[2][3]as the first Turkish femalele rower.[3][4]
