Ellen Spirois an American documentary filmmaker. She is a producer and director of the television documentaryAre the Kids Alright?,which won anEmmy Awardin 2005.[1]
Spiro is aprofessorat theUniversity of Texasat Austin, where she has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in documentary, experimental film, and music film production in the Department of Radio-TV-Film.[2]She is also a visiting professor at theUniversity of CaliforniaatBerkeley.[2]
Career
[edit]Spiro's work grew out of theAIDS activistmovement and tradition ofgrassrootsvideo activism. Her early work was shot on a compact Sony palmcorder and highlightedgayandlesbianstories.[3]One of her earliest award-winning works,Diana's Hair Ego,was the first small format video to be broadcast on national television.[3]Her work was presented twice in theMuseum of Modern Art.
Spiro created the10 Under 10 Film Festivalin Austin, TX.[4]
In 2006, Spiro was awarded an artist's residency at the Bellagio Center, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, inBellagio,Italy.[5]She worked withPhil DonahueonBody of War,a film aboutparalyzedIraq WarveteranTomas Young,which premiered at theToronto International Film Festivaland won a 'People's Choice Award' and the 'Audience Award for Best Documentary' at theHamptons International Film Festival.[6]It was shortlisted for nomination for anAcademy Awardin 2007.[7]In December, Body of War was named Best Documentary of 2007 by theNational Board of Review.[8]
She was recognized by students as one of the top 10 professors at theUniversity of Texasin 2018.[9]
