Ellison Litton Barber[1]is an American journalist and correspondent forNBC News.She frequently reports fromconflict zonesand contributes reporting to all NBC News platforms, includingNBC News,MSNBCandNBC News Now.[2]
Barber spent months on the ground reporting on theRussian invasion of Ukraine[3]and was among the first group of international correspondents to report on theIsrael-Hamas Warin 2023.[4][5]
Barber was reporting outside of the United States Capitol as a mobattacked and overtook the Capitol building.[6][7][8]She remained live on NBC News throughout the evening.[9]She won aNews & Documentary Emmy Awardfor her reporting on the siege of the U.S. Capitol, in 2022.[10]
In 2023, herwar reportingearned her an Emmy nomination forOutstanding Emerging Journalist.[11][12]
Originally fromAtlanta,Georgia,she graduated fromWofford Collegewith aBachelor of ArtsinEnglishin 2012.[13]
Career
[edit]Barber served as a general assignment reporter and thePrince George's CountyDeputy Bureau Chief for Washington'sCBSaffiliate,WUSA.[14]At WUSA, Barber reported on an array of stories,[15][16][17]including the2015 Washington, D.C., mass killingof the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, the March 2016 U.S. Capitol lockdown,[18]and the protests following the shooting of Terrence Sterling.[19][20]
In April 2017, she joinedFox Newsas a general assignment correspondent.[20][21]
In 2019, Barber reported on thepolitical turmoil in Venezuelaand the resultingrefugeecrisis in neighboring countries.[22][23]She and her crew were reporting on the Venezuela-Colombia border when gunfire erupted near theSimón Bolívar International Bridge[24]and a thirty-minute shootout ensued.[25][26][27]Barber was also the first reporter for a U.S.-based English-language network to travel toMaicao,Colombia and cover theUNHCRassistance camp set up to help refugees fleeing the political crisis in Venezuela.[28]
Barber joined NBC News as a New York-based correspondent on April 15, 2020.[29]
She extensively reported on the2019-20 coronavirus pandemicin the United States.[30][31][32][33]She reported inside COVID ICUs across the country, filing reports from Alaska[34]to Mississippi.[35][36]
Much of her career at NBC has been spent as awar correspondentcovering conflicts around the globe.[37][38][39]She reported from the frontlines of theUkraine-Russia War[40][41][42]and theIsrael-Hamas War.[43][37][44]While reporting along theGazaborder, she and her team came under rocket fire during multiple live reports.[4][45]
Barber reported from Haiti following the2024 Haitian jailbreakand the ouster of then-Acting PresidentAriel Henry.[46]
