Emilio T. Yap Sr.,GCLH(September 24, 1925 – April 7, 2014) was aChinese Filipinobusiness tycoon andphilanthropist.He was the chairman of the board of theManila Bulletin.

Biography[edit]

Emilio Yap, who was of Chinese descent, was born on September 24, 1925[1]inFujian Province,China.He moved to the Philippines where he studied and worked in a business owned by his grandfather in Manila, then went toDumagueteto work as a shopkeeper.[2]

He began his business career in 1942.[1]

Career[edit]

In July 1984, Yap was elected as the chairman of the board of theManila Bulletin,a position he held until his death in 2014.[3]He was also the vice president of the executive department of theManila Bulletin.[3]

Yap was the chairman ofManila Hotelfrom 1997 until 2014, chairman ofCentro Escolar Universitysince 2002, and the chairman emeritus ofPhiltrust Bank.[1][3]Forbesranked Yap as the 15th wealthiest person in the Philippines in 2013, with an estimated net worth of $1.1 billion.[1][3]

Death and legacy[edit]

Yap died on April 7, 2014, at the age of 88,[3]and was buried at theManila Memorial ParkinParañaqueon April 13, 2014.[2]

On August 3, 2015, a facility inside thePhilippine Red CrossTower National Blood Center was namedDon Emilio T. Yap Blood Apheresis Centerin honor of his charitable works with the organization.[4][5]
