Plot

Chella Kannu, a young sweeper becomes a popularmovie starknown as Kamala Devi. Her lover and fellow sweeper Manickam is the ladder of her success, but the villainy of her brother Muthu separates them.[1][2]

Production
[edit]Ennaipadigal,a remake of theTelugufilmSeetamalakshmi(1978),[2]was directed byP. Madhavan[1]and produced byK. S. Sethumadhavanunder Ramya Chitra.[5][6]The dialogues were written byMahendran.[2]Cinematography was handled by A. Somasundaram, and the editing by T. R. Srinivasalu.[6]N. Seshadri worked as sound engineer.[7]
Soundtrack
[edit]The soundtrack was composed byK. V. Mahadevan,[8]while the lyrics were written byKannadasan.[9]The song "Kannizhantha" is set in theCarnatic ragaknown asHamir Kalyani.[10]

Release and reception
[edit]Enippadigalwas released on 16 February 1979.[11]Koushikan ofKalkiappreciated the film for various aspects, including the cinematography and direction.[12]The film became a commercial success.[13]
Legacy
[edit]Sujatha Narayanan, writing forThe New Indian Express,namedEnippadigalas one of her favourite films starring Sivakumar.[14]S. R. Ashok Kumar ofThe Hindusaid that Shoba set "a new trend in realistic portrayals" through her performances in films likeEnippadigal.[15]
