Erdal Arıkan(born 1958) is a Turkish professor inElectrical and Electronics EngineeringDepartment atBilkent University,Ankara,Turkey.He is known for his invention ofpolar coding.

Early life and education

The son of a doctor and a homemaker, Erdal Arikan was born in 1958 and grew up in Turkey. He attended theMiddle East Technical Universityto studyelectrical engineering,but transferred toCalifornia Institute of Technologyin the middle of his freshman year as a result ofpolitical violence in Turkey.He started graduate studies atMassachusetts Institute of Technologyin 1981 where he was advised byRobert G. Gallagerand obtained his PhD in 1986.[1]

Arıkan briefly served as a tenure-track assistant professor at theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.He joinedBilkent Universityas a faculty member in 1987.[2]

Arıkan developedpolar codes,a system of coding that provides a mathematical basis for the solution ofShannon's channel capacity problem.[3]He presented a three-session lecture on the polar codes atSimons Institute's Information Theory Boot Camp at theUniversity of California, Berkeley.[4][5][6]The lecture is also featured on the Simons Institute webpage, which includes the slides used by Arıkan in his presentation.[7]

Arıkan is an IEEE Fellow (Class of 2012), and was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for 2014–2015.[8]

Awards

Arıkan received theIEEE Information Theory Society Paper Awardin 2010, and theSedat Simavi Science Awardfor the construction of new channel coding schemes.[9]Arıkan became the recipient of theKadir Has Achievement Awardin 2011 for the same accomplishment. He was named an IEEE fellow in 2012.[10]

Arıkan received theIEEE Richard W. Hamming Awardin 2018 "for contributions to information and communications theory, especially the discovery of polar codes and polarization techniques."[11]The same year, it was announced that he would be honored with the 2019Claude E. Shannon Award.

The Chinese telecommunications companyHuaweirecognized his "outstanding contribution to the development of communications technology in 2018."[12]
