Anexarchateis any territorialjurisdiction,either secular orecclesiastical,whose ruler is called anexarch.ByzantineEmperor Mauricecreated the first exarchates in the recently reconquered provinces of the formerWestern Empire.The term is still used for naming some of the smaller communities ofEastern Rite Catholicsas well asEastern Orthodox Christians.
