Fagernesis atowninNord-Aurdal MunicipalityinInnlandetcounty,Norway.The town is theadministrative centreof the municipality as well as the largest urban/commercial centre for theValdresregion. It is located just northwest of the village ofLeiraand about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of the village ofSkrautvål.The 2-square-kilometre (490-acre) town has a population (2021) of 1,951 and apopulation densityof 978 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,530/sq mi).[2][4]

Fagernes lies approximately 3 hours northwest of the capital city ofOslo,and is an important destination fortourism in Norway,due to good transportation connections and the nature in the surrounding Valdres valley, including the mountain areas such asJotunheimenandSpåtind.TheEuropean route E16highway runs through the town. TheStrondafjordenlake lies on the south side of the town.Tingnes Churchis located in the town.[4]Russian–Norwegian singerErika Lundmoenwas born in Fegernes.

History

On 14 June 2007 themunicipal councilof Nord-Aurdal decided to bestowtown statuson the large village of Fagernes. The decision came into force on 8 September 2007, when Fagernes celebrated the 150th anniversary of its establishment as a village.[5][4]

Name

Fagernesis a compound word made up offagerwhich means "fair" or "beautiful" andneswhich means "headland".

Climate

Fagernes has aboreal climate(subarctic), close to ahumid continental climate.February–April is the driest season, while summer is the wettest. The all-time low −36.4 °C (−33.5 °F) was recorded January 1987, and the all-time high 32.3 °C (90.1 °F) was recorded in both July 2014 and August 1982. The average date for first overnight freeze (below 0 °C (32 °F)) in autumn is 25 September (1981-2010 average).[6]
