Five Manhattan Westis a 16-story building at 450 West 33rd Street inHudson Yards,Manhattan,New York City.[1]Previously known asWestyard Distribution Center,[2]it was designed byDavis Brody Bondand opened in 1969.[3][4]
The building sits above rail tracks running west fromPenn Station.The portals of theNorth River TunnelsandEmpire Connectionare beneath the building.[5]
History
[edit]The building opened in 1969.[3]It is 16 stories tall[6]and covers about 1.8 million square feet (170,000 m2).[7]In the 1980s, the external structure was painted beige and brown metal siding was added.[8][6]In 2003, cosmetic work was done to theprecast concretefacade.[9]
Brookfield Propertiesacquired the property in 2011.[8]In 2014, Brookfield began a $300 million project to replace thebrutalist architectureconcrete exterior with a glassfacadeand replace the interior and mechanical systems.[10]The design work was done byREX.[8]When renovation of the building was completed in 2017, it was renamed 5Manhattan West.[5]In April 2018, Brookfield obtained a $1.15 billionmortgage loansecured by the building.[11]

[edit]- TheNew York Daily Newsmoved to the building in 1995 from its former headquarters at theDaily News Building.[12]
- DoubleClickwas a tenant from 1999 to 2003.[13]
- TheAssociated Pressmoved to the building from its former headquarters atRockefeller Centerin 2004;[14]it vacated in 2017.[8]
- R/GAsigned a lease to occupy 173,000 square feet in August 2014.[15]
- Markitsigned a lease to occupy 140,000 square feet in March 2015.[16]
- JPMorgan Chaseexpanded its space at the building by 305,000 square feet in June 2017.[17]
- Amazonsigned a lease to occupy 359,000 square feet in September 2017 for the primary New York City office of Amazon Advertising.[18]
- Peloton Interactivesigned leases for 32,000 square feet in April 2018.[19]
- Whole Foodsopened a 60,000 square foot store in the building in July 2020.[20]
- Noomsigned a sublease to occupy 113,000 square feet at the building in November 2020, taking space from R/GA.[21]
