Frank J. Farrell(c. 1866 – February 10, 1926) was an American baseball executive. He andWilliam S. Deverywere the first owners of the New York Highlanders (nowNew York Yankees). They purchased the Baltimore Orioles on January 9, 1903, for $18,000 and moved it toNew York City.[1]
Biography
[edit]He was born around 1866. Farrell was involved inNew York Citygambling, and owned pool halls and a casino. At one time he was the partner ofWilliam Burbridge.[2]
In 1912 he firedHarry Wolvertonas the manager of the Yankees.[3]On January 29, 1915, Farrell and Devery sold the Yankees toJacob RuppertandTillinghast L'Hommedieu Hustonfor $460,000.[4][5][6]
Farrell died inAtlantic City, New Jersey,of aheart attack,after recovering from a bout ofbronchitis.[7]

Harry Wolverton, who managed the New York Americans during the past season, was yesterday deposed as manager by Frank J. Farrell, owner of the club. The official announcement of Wolverton's release was not made at the club headquarters, Mr. Farrell refusing to make any statement other than that he had declined to renew Wolverton's contract for another year.
