David Fricke(born 1951 or 1952)[1]is an American music journalist who serves as the senior editor atRolling Stonemagazine, where he writes predominantly aboutrock music.One of the best known names in rock journalism, his career has spanned over 40 years.[2]In the 1990s, he was the magazine'smusic editor[3]before stepping down.

Early life and education

Fricke graduated fromMuhlenberg CollegeinAllentown, Pennsylvania,in 1973.[4][5][6]

Career

The first concert that Fricke attended was a show byPink Floyd.His love of live music inspired him to pursue a career in music journalism.[7]He has recalled meetingGeorge Harrison,at a promotional event in Washington, DC for the formerBeatle'sThirty Three & 1/3album, as a particularly "remarkable moment", saying, "it changed the way I listened to his music... I had spoken to the man, not the History."[8]

Before joiningRolling Stone,where he became senior editor, he wrote forCircus,Trouser Press,Synapse,andGood Times.[7][2]He has since written forMelody Maker,Mojo,andJazzTimes.[9]

Fricke has been nominated for aGrammy Awardfor his album liner notes and is a three-time winner of the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music journalism.[9]He has appeared on theClassic Albumsdocumentaries on the making ofPink Floyd'sThe Dark Side of the Moon,Cream'sDisraeli Gears,Def Leppard'sHysteria,Nirvana'sNevermind,Metallica'sBlack Album,Peter Gabriel'sSo,Frank Zappa'sApostropheandOver-Nite Sensationas well asRush'sMoving Picturesand2112albums. Fricke has also appeared on a number ofLou Reeddocumentaries and in theWilcodocumentaryI Am Trying to Break Your Heart.[10]

TheDomino Recording Companyreleased the North American version of the 30th anniversary reissue ofAztec Camera's debut album,High Land, Hard Rain,in 2014 with liner notes written by Fricke.[11][12]

As of 2013, he was creator of the "Fricke's Picks Radio" podcast and theAlternate Takeblog inRolling Stone,as well as serving as the Host of the Friday Night Affair on “Tom Petty Radio”.[13]He is currently a DJ atSirius XM Radio.[9]
