Gabriel Arcand(born June 4, 1949) is aCanadianactor.[1]He is the brother of film directorDenys Arcand.[2]

Career[edit]

After studying philosophy atMcGill University,Arcand spent his formative professional years atLa CriéeinMarseilles,France,and later inPolandwhere he studied theatre. Since he made his 1973 screen debut in his brother's first feature,La Maudite Galette,he established himself asQuebec’s iconic strong, silent type and has given subtle but powerful performances in a wide range of films such asRéjeanne Padovani,Les Plouffe,Le Crime d’Ovide Plouffe,Le Déclin de l’empire américain,Post MortemandCongorama.[3]

He won theAcademy of Canadian Cinema and Television's award forBest Actorat the6th Genie Awardsin 1985 for his performance inThe Crime of Ovide Plouffe(Le Crime d'Ovide Plouffe)and at the2nd Canadian Screen Awardsin 2014 forThe Dismantling(Le Démantèlement),and the award forBest Supporting Actorat the8th Genie Awardsin 1987 forDecline of the American Empire.He was also nominated for Best Actor at the3rd Genie Awardsin 1982 forLes Plouffeand at the20th Genie AwardsforPost Mortem,and for Best Supporting Actor at the2nd Genie Awardsin 1981 forSuzanneand at the20th Genie Awardsin 1999 forLe Grand serpent du monde.
