Gaerwen() is a village on the island ofAngleseyin thecommunityofLlanfihangel Ysgeifiog.It is located in the south of the island 4 miles (6.4 km) west ofLlanfairpwllgwyngylland 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast ofLlangefni.TheA5runs through the village, and theA55runs just a few hundred metres north. According to the2011 CensusGaerwen is now listed by the Office for National Statistics asLlanfihangel Ysgeifiog.[clarification needed]The population of thecommunityis 1,551.[1]Gaerwen andPentre Berw,Llangaffoare trio villages.
The village gets its name from a combination of the Welsh wordsCaer(mutated toGaer), meaning 'fortification', andWen,meaning 'white'. There are no clear remains of a fort in the area, although the name was originally that of a farm in the area, before becoming the name for the entire settlement.[2]
Gaerwen Hoard
[edit]An importantBronze Agehoard was found near Gaerwen in the nineteenth century. Comprising 2 goldlockringsand 2 penannular bracelets, it is now in the collections of theBritish Museum.[3]
Attractions
[edit]Facilities in Gaerwen include twopublic houses,and fourchurches.There are two disusedwindmillsin the north of the village and a modern industrial estate making up the south west portion.
There is aprimary schooland afootballpitch in the middle of the village. There is also afish and chipshop with abarbershop next door. Ascience parkon the south of the A55 Junction was opened in 2018.
There is a war memorial at the heart of the village paying tribute to those who fell in bothWorld Wars.
Governance
[edit]Anelectoral wardelectoral of the same name as the Community exists. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 2,016.[4]
Rail lines
[edit]The village houses the southernmoststationof theAnglesey Central Railway,which was in use between 1864 and 1993. It was also used on theBangortoHolyheadmainlineuntil 1963.
