Gambit as he appears inX-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • James Bamfordwas set to make a cameo appearance as Gambit inX2,but the scene was cut.[4]Despite this, Gambit's name appears onWilliam Stryker's computer.
  • Gambit appears in an early draft ofX-Men: The Last Standas a new student ofXavier's School for Gifted YoungstersandIceman's rival forRogue's affections. For this initial draft of the film,Channing Tatumauditioned for the role andKeanu Reeveswas also considered. This version of the character appears in the film’s novelization.[5]The character’s implementation in the story changed once Brett Ratner replaced Brian Singer as director, with the audio commentary accompanying the film’s home release stating Gambit was going to appear as a prisoner recruited into Magneto'sBrotherhood of Mutants, only to be cut prior to shooting.Josh Hollowaywas offered the role, but declined due to scheduling conflicts withLost.Gregory Helmsexpressed intentions to read for the part.[6]
  • Remy LeBeau / Gambit appears inX-Men Origins: Wolverine, portrayed byTaylor Kitsch. This version was held captive byWilliam Strykerfor two years, during which he received the nickname "Gambit" from the guards he consistently beat at poker and possesses the ability to charge objects with more force instead of explosive energy. Additionally, he lacks his comic book counterpart's black and red eyes, as the producers felt it was too distracting, and was inspired by theUltimate Marvelincarnation, who was reinterpreted as a retired thief with a Southern/Cajun accent.[7]Following screen tests withHugh Jackman,Josh Holloway, who had previously been offered the role for a cut appearance inX-Men: The Last Stand, was the initial choice for the role before his casting was overruled due to an unnamed studio executive’s desire for a younger actor in the part.[8]Prior to both Kitsch’s casting and the development of a Gambit solo film, Channing Tatum was also considered, having previously auditioned forLast Stand.
  • Channing Tatum was intended to portray Remy LeBeau / Gambit in atitular solo film, with development progressing over several years. In 2014,Lauren Shuler Donnerstated at the world premiere ofX-Men: Days of Future Pastthat Tatum would portray Gambit inX-Men: Apocalypse, followed by the solo film.[9][10]In October 2014, Tatum revealed that the Gambit film is in development and that they were looking for a writer. In October 2014, Fox officially announced the film asGambit, with a script from Joshua Zetumer, based on a story treatment by longtime X-Men scribeChris Claremont.Additionally,Simon Kinberg,Donner, Tatum andReid Carolinwould co-produce the film.[11]The film was initially scheduled to be released in October 2016,[12][13]with Tatum stating that it will be an origin story.[14]By June 2015,Rupert Wyattsigned onto the project as director.[15]By August 2016, Tatum stated that Gambit would not be inX-Men: Apocalypse.[16][17][18]By August 2015,Léa Seydouxhad been cast to portray LeBeau's love interest and fellow mutant,Bella Donna Boudreaux.[19][20][21]The following month, Wyatt dropped out of production due to scheduling conflicts.[22]Kinberg stated a further month later that he hoped to start filming the following spring.[23]The film was re-slated for an October 2016 release date,[24]but had several delays as the studio wanted to get the script right and set a unique tone and the right voice.[25][26]By July of the same year, Kinberg announced that the film's script was completed, withDoug Limanattached as director, after overseeing script re-writes, with filming slated to begin the following spring.[27]However, by August, Liman also left production due to scheduling conflicts.[28]Amidst further production delays and while on a press tour promoting the television seriesLegion,Donner confirmed that Tatum is still signed on to star in the film and is highly involved with the development process.[29][30]By August 2017, the script was undergoing further rewrites, citing the successes of bothDeadpoolandLogan.[31]By October, it was announced thatGore Verbinskiwas hired as the film's new director. Later, the working title ofGambitwas revealed to beChess. On January 11, 2018, Verbinski departed, leaving the film without a director once more.[32]In May 2018, Kinberg stated that the final script had been completed and production will begin in the third quarter of 2018.[33]On September 27, 2018, Kinberg revealed toIGNthat the film will be a romantic comedy.[34]The film was scheduled to be released on March 13, 2020.[35]On March 14, 2019, due toDisney's then-pending acquisition of Fox,Wyatt stated, "now Disney have the reins so I don't know what their plans are."[36]The movie was officially shelved in May 2019.[37]
