La Défense station(French pronunciation:[ladefɑ̃s]) is a station of theTransilien(Réseau Saint-Lazare) suburban rail lines,RERcommuter rail network,Paris Métro,as well as a stop of theÎle-de-France tramnetwork. In the future,Paris Metro Line 15ofGrand Paris Expresswill pass through here, making it a huge railway hub. It is underneath theGrande Archebuilding inLa Défense,the business district just west of Paris. The station is the western terminus ofMétro Line 1and connects theRER Aline to the Métro Line 1 station since 1992, theLine 2 tramwaysince 1994 andSNCF(Transilien) train station. It is also attached to amajor shopping centre.There are over 25 million entries and exits each year. A temporary specialSNCFservice began in April 1959 to serve the newly-builtCentre of New Industries and Technologies(CNIT); theRERentered service on 19 January 1970 .[3][4][5]TheRER Estation built under the CNIT opened on 6 May 2024.
Highlights on the surface nearby include the monumental Grande Arche, skyscrapers that host the headquarters of important French and foreign companies, and works ofurban artsuch asLe PoucebyCésar Baldaccini.From the central esplanade theArc de Triomphecan be seen further down theAxe historique.Until May 2004, this part ofLa Défensehosted an information centre of theEuropean Unionmanaged by theEuropean Parliament.Like the district it serves, the station takes its name from the 19th-century statueLa Défense de Paris,commemorating theFranco-Prussian War.
