Rank in modern Germany[edit]

The rank is ratedOF-8inNATO,and is grade B9 in the pay rules of theFederal Ministry of Defence.It is equivalent toVizeadmiralin theGerman Navy(Marine), or toGeneraloberstabsarzt,andAdmiraloberstabsarztin theZentraler Sanitätsdienst der Bundeswehr.On the shoulder straps (Heer, Luftwaffe) there are three golden pips (stars) in golden oak leaves.

National People's Army[edit]

Generalleutnantwas in the so-calledarmed organs of the GDR(German:Bewaffnete Organe der DDR), represented byMinistry of National Defence,andMinistry for State Security,the second lowestgeneral officerrank, comparable to thetwo-star rankin many NATO-Armed forces. This was in reference to Soviet military doctrine and in line with other armed forces of theWarsaw Pact.
