Germinal Pierre Dandelin

Germinal Pierre Dandelin(/ʒɛʁminˈal pjˈɛʁ dɑ̃dlˈɛ̃/, 12 April 1794 – 15 February 1847) was a Frenchmathematician,soldier,andprofessorofengineering.

Life

He was born nearParisto aFrenchfather andBelgianmother, studying first atGhentthen returning to Paris to study at theÉcole Polytechnique.He was wounded fighting underNapoleon.He worked for the Ministry of the Interior underLazare Carnot.Later he became a citizen of theNetherlands,a professor ofmining engineeringinBelgium,and then a member of the Belgian army.

Work

He is the eponym of theDandelin spheres,of Dandelin's theorem ingeometry(for an account of that theorem, seeDandelin spheres), and of theDandelin–Gräffe numerical methodof solution of algebraic equations. He also published on thestereographic projection,algebra,andprobability theory.
