Gerald John Philbin(born July 31, 1941) is an American former professionalfootballplayer who was adefensive endin theAmerican Football League(NFL) andNational Football League(NFL). He was a four-yearstarterplayingcollege footballfor theBuffalo Bulls,earning several honors including second-teamAll-American,Little All-American,and All-American Academic team.^[1]Drafted by both theDetroit Lionsof the NFL and theNew York Jetsof the AFL in the third round of their respective 1964 drafts, he joined the Jets and became an immediate starter and perennialAll-AFLselection at defensive end. He played stellar defense for them for nine seasons.

He was selected as anAFL All-Starin 1968 and 1969. A ferocious pass-rusher, Philbin recorded14+1⁄2sacks of opposing quarterbacks in 1968, helping the Jets win theAFL championship.In the thirdAFL-NFL World Championship Game,Philbin anchored the Jets defense in limiting the Colts to seven points.

In 1973, he joined thePhiladelphia Eaglesfor one season and finished his career in the short-livedWorld Football Leagueas a member of theNew York Starsin 1974 where he joined formerSuper Bowl IIIalumniGeorge Sauer, Jr,Randy Beverly,John Dockery,John Elliott,andVito (Babe) Parilli.He was anAll-WFLselection in 1974. Philbin is a member of theAFL All-Time Team.
