Construction began on 15 March 1992, duringRamadan.[2]Each night throughout its construction, ahafizrecited theHoly Quranon the construction site.[2]Building work ended in 1996. It can fit up to 6,000 people at one time.[2]

The Masjid is named after aSufi saint's place of residence, Ghamkol Sharif nearKohat,in northernPakistan.Sufi saint Zinda Peer Sahib has followers in several countries, especially in the UK.[3]
