Gil Rodin

Gilbert A. Rodin[1](December 9, 1906 – June 10, 1974)[2]was an Americanjazzsaxophonist,songwriter, andrecord producer.He was born in the Russian Empire.[2]

Career

Rodin was raied inChicago,Illinois,United States.[1]Rodin studied saxophone,clarinet,flute,andtrumpetas a youngster.[2]He played inChicagowithArt Kahnin the middle of the 1920s.[2]He moved toCalifornia,[1]and played withHarry Bastinbefore joiningBen Pollackin 1927,[1]remaining in his band until 1934.[2]Concomitantly, Rodin did studio work and played withRed Nichols's radio band.[2]He made his only recordings as a leader in 1930-31, amounting to four tracks which includedJack Teagardenon vocals, as well asEddie MillerandBenny Goodmanas sidemen.[2]

After the dissolution of Pollack's band in 1935,[1]Rodin played with some of the players in the group untilBob Crosbyregrouped them into his own ensemble; Rodin remained with Crosby through 1942, when he wasdrafted.[2]While serving in theArmyinWorld War II,Rodin played in the Artillery Band; after his discharge he played withRay Bauduc(1944–45) and then with Crosby again.[2]

Later in his career, Rodin did work in radio and television production,[1]withBill Cosbyamong others.[2]He produced thesoundtracksto the filmsAmerican GraffitiandThe Sting.

Compositions

His best-known composition is "Big Noise from Winnetka",for which he and Bob Crosby added lyrics to already-existing music byRay BauducandBob Haggart.[3]The song has appeared in the filmsRaging Bull(1980) directed byMartin Scorsese,the 1982 filmCannery Row,Woody Allen'sManhattan Murder Mystery(1993),Saving Mr. Banks(2013), andWhat If(2013), though the lyrics are not necessarily included in all of these.
