Giovanni Martino Spanzotti
Giovanni Martino Spanzotti(c. 1455 – c. 1528; also known asGian Martino Spanzotti) was an Italian painter active inPiedmont,Lombardyand northernItaly.
Biography
[edit]He was born inCasale Monferratoand died inChivasso.Little is known of his life. Born into a family of painters fromVarese,he likely apprenticed with his father, Pietro. He appears to have had contacts with eitherFrancesco del Cossaor his works, including theMadonna Enthroned(orMadonna Tucker) in theTurin City Museum of Ancient Art.Other influences areZanetto BugattoandVincenzo Foppa.Spanzotti painted between 1480 and 1498 in thePiedmont,as well as in Casale Monferrato andVercelli.Works from this period include the Triptych in theGalleria Sabauda(his sole signed work) and theAdoration with ChildinRivarolo Canavese.Around 1485-1490 he executed a cycle of frescoes of theLife of Christin the church of San Bernardino inIvrea.
His pupils includedil SodomaandDefendente Ferrari.
