Giskeis an islandmunicipalityinMøre og Romsdalcounty,Norway.The municipality lies north-northwest of thetown of Ålesundin thetraditional districtofSunnmøre.The municipal centre isValderhaugstrand.Other population centres include the villages ofRoald(onVigraisland) andAlnesandLeitebakk(both onGodøyaisland). The municipality is part of theÅlesund Region.
The 41-square-kilometre (16 sq mi) municipality is the 349th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Giske is the 125th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 8,692. The municipality'spopulation densityis 217.7 inhabitants per square kilometre (564/sq mi) and its population has increased by 15.3% over the previous 10-year period.[3][4]
General information
[edit]Giske Municipality was established on 1 January 1908 when it was separated from the large municipality ofBorgund.The initial population of the new municipality was 1,708 and it included the islands ofValderøya,Godøya,andGiske.During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of theSchei Committee.Then on 1 January 1964, the neighbouringVigraMunicipality (on theisland of Vigra) was merged into Giske Municipality. The newly enlarged municipality had a population of 4,644.[5]
Name
[edit]The municipality is named after the farm and island ofGiske(Old Norse:Gizki), since the firstGiske Churchwas built there. The name comes from the wordgizkiwhich means "tablecloth"or"rag"(maybe because theislandis small and flat).[6]
Coat of arms
[edit]Thecoat of armswas granted on 14 June 1985, but it has old roots. The officialblazonis"Azure,a lionrampantguardantOr"(Norwegian:På blå grunn ei opprett leopardiset gull løve). This means the arms have a bluefield(background) and thechargeis a lion that isrampant(i.e. in walking position) andguardant(i.e. facing the viewer). The lion has atinctureofOrwhich means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. The arms are based on the old seal ofErling Vidkunssonwho was using thelionon his seal in 1355. His family was one of the most wealthy and influential families in the county, and had their origins and estate on Giske. The arms were designed by Jarle Skuseth. The municipal flag has the same design as the coat of arms.[7][8]

[edit]TheChurch of Norwayhas three parishes (sokn) within the municipality of Giske. It is part of theNordre Sunnmøre prosti(deanery) in theDiocese of Møre.

Recording Studio
[edit]Giske Harbor Hall (Øygardshallen) is an internationally renowned, purpose-built recording studio located on the shore of the Giske island's former harbor. It looks like an old boathouse and also operates as a concert hall. The British band New Model Army recorded its album "From Here" (2019) in this special recording studio.[9]
Government
[edit]Giske Municipality is responsible forprimary education(through 10th grade), outpatienthealth services,senior citizenservices,welfareand othersocial services,zoning,economic development,and municipalroadsand utilities. The municipality is governed by amunicipal councilofdirectly electedrepresentatives. Themayorisindirectly electedby a vote of the municipal council.[10]The municipality is under the jurisdiction of theMøre og Romsdal District Courtand theFrostating Court of Appeal.

[edit]Themunicipal council(Kommunestyre) of Giske is made up of 23 representatives that are elected to four year terms. Interestingly, in the 2007 municipal elections, Giske recorded the highest vote for theChristian Democratic Partyin all of Norway at 43.2 percent. Geography
[edit]The municipality is composed of four main islands:Giske,which gives its name to the municipality because of its historical importance,Vigra,which is whereÅlesund's airportis located,Valderøya,where the municipal administration is located, andGodøya.There are also many smaller islands within its boundaries. TheAlnes Lighthouse,Erkna Lighthouse,andStorholmen lighthouseare all located on islands in the municipality.
The main islands are all connected to the mainland of Norway by a network of tunnels and bridges.Godøy Tunnelconnects Godøy to Giske island.Giske Bridgeconnects Giske island and Valderøy. Acausewayconnects Vigra island and Valderøy island. All islands are connected to Valderøy island which is where the mainValderøy Tunnelconnects the whole municipality toEllingsøyaisland inÅlesund Municipality.Finally, theEllingsøy Tunnelconnects that island to the town ofÅlesund.
Climate
[edit]Giske is situated at the coast and has atemperate oceanic climate(Cfb) with very mild winters for the latitude, sometimes with strong winds in winter and late autumn. All-time high is 30 °C (86 °F) recorded 28 July 2018, while the all-time low is −11.9 °C (10.6 °F) recorded January 2016. Winter lows rarely go below −8 °C (18 °F). Coldest month on record was February 1966 with mean −1.5 °C (29.3 °F), warmest month was August 2003 with mean 16.9 °C (62.4 °F). Ålesund Airport Vigra in Giske has been recording since July 1958.

History
[edit]Giske is the site ofMjelthaugen,an ancient burial place dating from theBronze Age.The site was the location of excavations in 1847, 1867 and 1878. Giske is also the place where, according toSnorre Sturlason,Harald Fairhairhad his hair cut after uniting Norway. The historicGiske Churchis also located on the island of Giske.[34]
