In American English, agym bagorcarryallis a largebagmade ofclothorleathertypically with a rectangular base and azipperedopening at the top. Twohandlesenable the bag to be carried, and a(usually removable) straplets the user support the bag on theshoulders.
In British English, the same kind of bag is called asports bag.Aholdall(or occasionally hold-all) may be a similar bag but may often have wheels and possibly a telescopic handle. The term covers a wide variety of types of bag.
Agym bagis often misnamed a duffel bag. These misnamed"duffle bags"are cylindrical like aduffle bag,but zip open on the long, horizontal side, and have handles like atote bag.
Uses
[edit]A holdall is often used in place of asuitcaseor for carryingsports equipment,and has the advantage over most suitcases of beingcompressiblewhen empty.
A holdall is also used to carrybeddingandblanketsetc. Students, enrolled in military boarding schools in India, are issued a 'hold-all' to carry their blankets, quilts and clothes][1]It is a flat, rectangular,canvasbag, when unravelled. Once filled, it is rolled like asleeping bagand held together with straps.
