TheHainan gymnure(Neohylomys hainanensis) orHainan moonratis a species ofmammalin the familyErinaceidae.Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry forests. It was thought to beendemicto the island ofHainan,China,where it is threatened due tohabitat loss,but in 2018 was found to also occur in, and be rather common, inNorthern Vietnam.[2]

Thisgymnureis in themonotypicgenusNeohylomys.Although previously considered part of the genusHylomys,gene sequencing of a mitochondrial cytochromebgene supports the idea that the species is sufficiently distantly related to comprise a genus of its own.[3]
