Haskovo Province(Bulgarian:Област Хасково-Oblast Haskovo,former nameHaskovookrug,Turkish:Hasköy) is aprovincein southernBulgaria,neighbouringGreeceandTurkeyto the southeast, comprising parts of the Thracian valley along the riverMaritsa.It is named after its administrative and industrial centre: the city ofHaskovo.The province has a territory of 5,533.3 km2(2,136.4 sq mi)[1]that is divided into 11 municipalities with a total population, as of December 2009,of 256,408 inhabitants.[2][3][4]

The Haskovo province (Област,oblast) contains 11 municipalities[5](singular: община,obshtina- plural: Общини,obshtini). The Haskovo had apopulationof 277,483 (277,478 also given) according to a 2001census,of which48.9% weremaleand51.1% werefemale.[11]

As of the end of 2009, the population of the province, announced by the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute, numbered 256,408[3]of which25.8% are inhabitants aged over 60 years.[12]
