Hedmarken(Urban East Norwegian:[ˈhêːdmɑrkn̩],local pronunciation:[ˈhæ̂ɪmɑrçɑ,ˈhɛ̂m-];known asHedemarken[ˈhêːdəmɑrkn̩]until 2003)[1]is atraditional districtinInnlandetcounty inEastern Norway.

Hedmarken consists of the municipalitiesStange,Hamar,Løten,andRingsaker.In the past, it also contained the municipalities ofRomedal,Vang,Furnes,andNes,but those municipalities were merged into Hamar, Stange, and Ringsaker during the 20th century.[2]Traditionally, it also includedGjøvikon the other side of the lake, but this is no longer the case.[3]The old county ofHedmarkwas named after the district of Hedmarken, but the county included several other districts as well, namelyØsterdalenandGlåmdalen(Solør,OdalenandVinger).[4]

The district is dominated by rolling agricultural terrain, hilly green mountains, andpineforests.

Etymology

TheOld Norseform of the name wasHeiðmǫrk.The first element isheiðnir,the name of an oldGermanictribe and is related to the wordheiðwhich means "moorland".The last element ismǫrkwhich means "woodland", "borderland", or "march".(See alsoTelemarkandFinnmark.)[4]

"In Hedmarken" is translatedpå Hedmarkenwhich literally means "on Hedmarken".[5]
