Hermit Island (Wisconsin)

Hermit Islandis aWisconsinisland inLake Superiorand a part of theApostle Islands.Along with most of the islands in the group, it is a part of theApostle Islands National Lakeshore.It was named after a hermit who lived on the island from the late 1840s to 1861.
Hermit Island was home to a number of quarries for itsbrownstonefrom the 1860s to the 1890s.
Hermit Island has gone by other names in its history, including "Ashuwaguindag Miniss" (Ojibwefor "The Further Island" ), Illinois Island, Austrian Island, Wilson's Island and Askew Island.[1]
It is nearly 2 nautical miles (4 km) long, lying 2 nautical miles (4 km) west of the northern tip ofMadeline Island.
