Hoyasemys(meaning "turtle ofLas Hoyas") is anextinctgenusof basaleucryptodiranfreshwaterturtlefrom LowerCretaceous(upperBarremianstage) deposits ofCuenca Province,Spain. It is known from theholotypeMCCM-LH 84, a nearly complete and articulatedskeletonincluding theskull.It was found in the 1980s from the Las Hoyas site of theCalizas de La Huérguina Formation,nearLa Ciervatownship, Spain. It was first named by Adán Pérez-García, Marcelo S. de la Fuente and Francisco Ortega in2011and thetype speciesisHoyasemys jimenezi.The generic name is derived from the wordHoyasmeaning "the basin" in Spanish, which refers to the Las Hoyas fossil site it was found in, andemys( "freshwater turtle" inGreek). Thespecific namehonors Dr. Emiliano Jiménez Fuentes.[1]
