Humphrey I of Toron

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Humphrey I ofToron(Onfroy de Toron), aNorman, appears initially in 1115 as a vassal ofJoscelin I of Edessa, prince of Galilee. The castle at Toron was built in the years after 1105, and so Humphrey most likely was its lord from that date, having taken part in theFirst Crusade.

He was the father ofHumphrey II of Toron, whose mother is not known.[1]

Humphrey I was certainly a Norman from Italy, and perhaps connected to theHouse of Hautevillewho had settled in Southern Italy. One of his descendants of the fifteenth century claimedTancred of Hautevilleas ancestor. Family tradition was that their origins were inDenmark, possiblyViking.
