The genusHylophylaxwas erected by the American ornithologistRobert Ridgwayin 1909 with thespotted antbirdas thetype species.[2]It contains three species:[3]
- Spotted antbird,Hylophylax naevioides
- Spot-backed antbird,Hylophylax naevius
- Dot-backed antbird,Hylophylax punctulatus
Thecommon scale-backed antbirdwas formerly included inHylophylax.A molecular study found that it was not closely related to the other species and it was therefore moved to a newly erected genusWillisornis.[4][5][6]
