TheDalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence(Italian:Istituto Dalle Molle di Studi sull'Intelligenza Artificiale,IDSIA) is aresearchinstitution based inLugano,inCanton Ticinoin southern Switzerland. It was founded in 1988 byAngelo Dalle Mollethrough the privateFondation Dalle Molle. In 2000 it became a publicresearch institute, affiliated with theUniversità della Svizzera italianaandSUPSIinTicino,Switzerland. In 1997 it was listed among the top tenartificial intelligencelaboratories, and among the top four in the field ofbiologically-inspired AI.[2]

In 2007 a robotics lab with focus onintelligent and learning robots, especially in the fields ofswarmandhumanoid robotics, was established.[3]

Between 2009 and 2012,artificial neural networksdeveloped at the institute won eight international competitions inpattern recognitionandmachine learning.[4]

IDSIA is one of four Swiss research organisations founded by the Dalle Molle foundation, of which three are in the field of artificial intelligence.[5]
