Ihtiman(Bulgarian:Ихтиман[ixtiˈman]) is a town in westernBulgaria,part ofSofia Province.It is located in theIhtiman Valleyof the IhtimanskaSredna Goramountain range and lies in a valley 48 km fromSofiaand 95 km fromPlovdiv,close to theTrakiya motorway.
Formerly aRomandefensive station guarding the important roads to theBosphorus,Ihtiman was then calledStipon.It continued to play this role under theByzantine Empireand later under theFirstandSecond Bulgarian Empires,with the main defensive centre in the region of theGate of Trajanhill pass. In 986 the Bulgarian EmperorSamueldealt a crushing defeat on the Byzantines in thebattle of the Gates of Trajan.
Following theOttomanconquest of Bulgaria in the 14th century, the town's name was changed toIhtiman,which is thought to be ofOttoman Turkishorigin.
The traditional and dominant religion isEastern Orthodox Christianity.
Ihtiman HookonLivingston Islandin theSouth Shetland Islands,Antarcticais named after Ihtiman.[1]

Ihtiman has a temperate continental climate with very cold and snowy winters and not too hot, relatively short summers. The average annual temperature is 8.9C.
