Historically a fruit-growing district,[3]the current land use is predominantlyrural residentialhousing with somegrazingandhorticulture.[4]

History

Following the establishment of a settlement there about 1890, the locality was named Ilkley afterIlkeyinYorkshire,England, the home town of the local preacher Joseph Kitson.[2]

On 16 May 1891, the 10-acre (4.0 ha) Portion 22 of the Parish of Mooloolah was reserved for a school.[5]Tenders were called to erect the school in December 1900.[6]Ilkley Provisional School opened on 25 November 1901 under head teacher Walter Jeremy. An official opening was held on 17 January 1902.[7]It became Ilkley State School on 1 January 1909. In 1924, it briefly became a part-time school sharing a teacher withChevallum State School.After that, Ilkley State School remained a full-time school until its final closure on 31 December 1964 due to low student attendance.[8]It was at 525 Ilkley Road (26°42′59″S152°59′50″E/ 26.71629°S 152.99710°E/-26.71629; 152.99710(Ilkley State School (former))).[9][10][11]The Coolum Branch of theQ.C.W.A.purchased the school building in December 1966 and relocated it to Coolum.[12]
