Illinois Centennial Memorial Column rests in the center of the square named forAmerican Civil WarGeneralJohn A. Logan.

Illinois Centennial Memorial Column,Logan Square MonumentorIllinois Centennial Monumentis a public monument in theLogan Squarecommunity areaand theChicago LandmarkandNational Register of Historic Places-listedLogan Square Boulevards Historic District.[1][2]Built in 1918 to celebrate the 100th anniversary ofIllinois' statehood, the monument, designed byHenry Bacon,famed architect of theLincoln MemorialinWashington, DC,is a single 70-foot (21 m) tallmarbleDoriccolumntopped by an eagle, in reference to theFlag of Illinois.[3][4]Reliefssurrounding the base depict figures of Native Americans, explorers, farmers and laborers intended to show the great changes experienced during the state's 1st century.[5]Although Bacon designed the main column,Evelyn Beatrice Longmandesigned and sculpted the reliefs.[6]

It is located at NorthMilwaukee Avenueand Logan Boulevard in the public square known as Logan Square. The monument is cased inTennessee marble.[7]The column is composed of 13 solid marble segments and is based on the same proportions and scale as the columns that make up thecolonnadeof theParthenoninGreece.[4]The column is opposed by aflagpoleand a concrete plaque dedicated to American soldiers who died inWorld War I,World War IIand theKorean War.[5]The monument was funded by theBenjamin FergusonFund.[8]Daniel Boone,HiawathaandCeresare among those depicted in the base.[9]

In 1997 theChicago Department of Transportationplanted 81 trees around the column includinghackberry,Patmoregreen ash,Skylinehoneylocust,red oak,swamp white oak,alpine currant,Virginia Roseand three varieties ofhawthorns:downy,Washingtonandthornless cockspur.[10]
