TheIndian cricket teamtoured Australia from November 2024 to January 2025 to play fiveTestmatches and threefirst-classwarm-up matches against theAustralian cricket team.[1]The Test matches formed part of the2023–2025 ICC World Test Championship.[2][3]In March 2024, theCricket Australia(CA) announced the venues for the Test series.[4]It was the first Test series between India and Australia comprising five matchessince 1992.[5]On 26 March 2024, the CA confirmed the full tour itinerary.[6]

India had retained theBorder–Gavaskar Trophyafter defeating Australia 2–1 in theprevious series in 2023.[7][8]

Venues

Cricket Australiaannounced their summer cricket schedule in March 2024.[9]The series will be played at the main cricket grounds in Australia's five largest cities. It will be the first five-match test series to be played between the two nations sinceIndia's tour of Australia in 1991/92.

Squads

India named an 18-member squad for the test series along withMukesh Kumar,Navdeep SainiandKhaleel Ahmedas travelling reserves.[12]

On 17 November,Shubman Gillwas ruled out of the first Test with a fractured thumb of his left hand, during the intra-squad training match at the WACA.[13][14]On 20 November,Devdutt Padikkal,who was a part of the India A squad and was asked to stay back as cover with a few injury scares due to several batsmen getting blows during the practice match with India A, was added to the main squad.[15]Additionally,Yash Dayalwas added to the list of travelling reserves as a replacement for the injured Khaleel Ahmed.[16]

On 27 November,Beau Websterwas added to the Australian squad as cover for the possible unavailability of Mitchell Marsh due to injury.[17][18]On 30 November,Sean AbbottandBrendan Doggettwere added into the Australian squad for the second Test as injury replacement forJosh Hazlewoodwho was ruled out due to side strain.[19][20]

On 17 December, Josh Hazlewood was ruled out of the rest of the series after he suffered a calf strain on the fourth day of the 3rd Test.[21][22]

On 18 December, following the 3rd Test,Ravichandran Ashwinannounced his retirement from international cricket.[23]On 23 December,Tanush Kotianwas added into the squad.[24][25]

On 20 December,Nathan McSweeneywas dropped from the squad for the last two Tests withJhye RichardsonandSam Konstasadded to the squad.[26][27]

On 29 December,Josh Ingliswas ruled out from the squad for the last Test due to calf strain.[28][29]

The tour was kickstarted byIndia AtouringAustraliafrom 31 October to 10 November, ending just 5 days before the official Test series starts.Cricket Australiaannounced theirAustralia Asquad in early October 2024, namingNathan McSweeneyas their captain.[30]Board of Control for Cricket in IndiaannouncedIndia A cricket team's squad in October 2024, namingRuturaj Gaikwadas the side's captain along withAbhimanyu Easwaranas the vice-captain.[31]

India 'A' played two games against Australia 'A'. The first of those matches was played at theGreat Barrier Reef Arenafrom 31 October to 3 November while the second was played at theMelbourne Cricket Groundfrom 7 to 10 November. The first Test will be played at the newPerth Stadiumfrom 22 November.

While announcing the international schedule,Peter Roach,CA's head of Cricket Operations and Scheduling, had said in May: "The 2024–25 summer is highlighted by the five-TestBorder–Gavaskarseries, the first five-Test series between the two giants in more than 30 years. To have that running simultaneously with the women's ODIs and preceded by two significant Australia A v India A matches will be terrific for our fans. "

Prior to the start of the series,Mark Steketeeand his replacementLiam Hatcherwere both ruled out due to injury and were replaced byBrendan Doggett.[32]On 3 November 2024,KL RahulandDhruv Jurelwere added to the squad for the second unofficial Test.[33][34]

On the day 4 of the match, IndianwicketkeeperIshan Kishanand the on-field umpireShawn Craigcould be heard on stump-mic arguing about the condition of the ball as the umpires thought that the ball has been scratched intentionally, putting allegations upon the Indian cricket team for ball tampering, to which the Indian cricket team including the captainRuturaj Gaikwadand wicketkeeperIshan Kishanopposed and argued over as they had been maintaining the ball to generate reverse swing in their attempt to make a comeback in the game.[35][36]
